When the shipping you charge does not match what USPS charges you
A buyer pays $8 for shipping. The label for that order costs $11.40. Nothing failed: the $8 was set weeks ago from a parcel that was average, and this order was not.
The gap leans one way. Light orders overpay a little, heavy ones cost you a lot, and the month ends with more postage than shipping income.
Why the two numbers drift apart
A flat rate is a price you set once, from the parcels you happened to be shipping then. A weight table is the same bet in bands. Real postage moves with three things at once, weight, box size and distance, and carriers reprice on their own schedule, so last January's table is already a year behind.
Weight is the part that drifts quietly. Wix is blunt about it in its note on rate-by-weight rules: "If a product doesn't have a weight added, it's calculated as though it weighs 0." One product added in a hurry drops a whole order into your cheapest band, and the order page never says so.
What the built-in rules can and cannot do
Wix Stores comes with five rate rules you fill in yourself: Free Shipping, Flat Rate, Rate by Weight, Rate by Price and Rate by Quantity. Rate by Weight is the closest to real postage: you enter ranges such as "0 lb. to 2 lb.", up to thirty of them, and "When customers check out, they'll only see the rates that apply to their order."
Two limits are worth knowing first. Wix states that "Currently, it is not possible to combine shipping rules based on weight with shipping rules based on price," and the unit stays the pound or the kilo, since "it is not possible to enter the product's weight in grams or ounces."
There is a native USPS calculator too, "available for merchants based in the U.S selling in USD (except Puerto Rico)," and past that Wix points at apps: "Using third-party apps, you can offer real-time shipping rates on your site." Either route needs the step people miss: "You must enable the app in each region where you want customers to see it."
What the gap looks like across three orders
The numbers below are an example, written to show the shape of the problem. They are not measurements from a real store.
Say you charge a flat $8 and ship from Massachusetts. A 1 lb mug going two states over costs about $7.04 in USPS Ground Advantage, so you keep $0.96. A 4 lb box to the west coast costs about $14.60, and a 9 lb box to the same place about $24.30.
Sell forty of the first in a month and ten of each of the others, and the flat rate ends the month around $190 short, while the buyer of the mug paid $0.96 more than the postage.
What changes when checkout asks the carrier
Live rates turn the guess into a question. A shopper enters an address, checkout asks what that parcel costs to that ZIP, and the answer is what they pay: $7.04 for the mug, and whatever a 9 lb box really costs.
SafeRates is our Wix app. It answers the checkout rate request with live USPS estimates and records every request it handles.
Install it and turn it on for your US region
Install from the App Market, then open Settings, Shipping, delivery & fulfillment. Open the region that covers the US, usually named Domestic, choose Manage apps, turn SafeRates on and save. Installing alone does nothing; this switch is what makes checkout ask.

Check the ship-from address and your weights
SafeRates quotes from the business address on your Wix site; if Wix holds none, enter the ZIP you ship from in Settings. Then look for products with no weight, because that is where the undercharging began. A default weight keeps an option alive for carts that still hold one.

Run a test checkout, then read the log
Check out to a US address and you should see up to three USPS services, each with its delivery estimate. Overview then lists every request checkout made, with its destination, result, the lowest price a shopper saw and the response time.

What it costs, and what it will not do
SafeRates runs for 14 days from install with no plan and no card. After that there is one plan, Standard: US$29 a month, or US$24 a month billed yearly, charged through Wix.
The limits are deliberate. It returns USPS services only, for US domestic checkouts, and connects no carrier account of yours, so the prices hold no negotiated discount and are estimates rather than a promise of a later label price.
Frequently asked questions
Will the rate match what I pay for the label?
Not to the cent. SafeRates quotes through a managed USPS feed, not your own carrier account, so your negotiated discounts are not in the number. It estimates what that parcel costs to that ZIP, and does not promise a later label price.
What happens if no rate comes back?
The backup flat rate you saved goes out instead, so checkout shows an option rather than nothing, and Overview labels that request Backup rate. Without a backup saved, such a cart gets no SafeRates option at all.
Do I have to delete my flat rate rule?
No, but a cheaper rule in the same region will win, because Wix lists every option the region offers and shoppers take the lowest.
What does it cost?
Fourteen days from install with no card, then US$29 a month, or US$24 a month billed yearly, on the Standard plan and billed through Wix. Cancel during the trial and nothing is charged.
